Our Services

Fire watchers in South Carolina are assigned to help protect people and property when a building’s fire alarm or sprinkler system is out of service, or when required by the Fire Marshal due to special circumstances, nuisance alarms, or events. Their primary role is to actively monitor the facility for fire, life safety, or property hazards and to take immediate action if a problem is identified. This includes conducting regular patrols of the entire building—typically every 15 or 30 minutes depending on occupancy—watching for signs of fire or unsafe conditions, and ensuring occupants are alerted and evacuated if necessary. Fire watch personnel must be able to directly contact the fire department (such as by phone or radio), call 911 with accurate details in an emergency, and use any remaining alarm or public address systems to assist with evacuation if available.

In addition, fire watchers are expected to be familiar with the layout of the facility and the location and basic use of fire protection equipment, such as fire extinguishers, though they are not expected to perform firefighting beyond what an ordinary citizen could safely do. They must keep a detailed fire watch log documenting patrol times, observations, communications with the fire department or monitoring company, and their name. Fire watch personnel cannot be assigned other duties while performing fire watch unless approved by the fire department. The building owner is responsible for establishing and maintaining the fire watch, notifying the appropriate authorities of system outages and restorations, and ensuring the fire watch continues until the fire protection systems are fully restored and the Fire Marshal’s Office cancels the fire watch.
